The waiting time for patients in A&E Department is made up of three elements:
1. Waiting to see the Doctor in the first place
2. Waiting for tests and assessment to be carried out for diagnosis
3. Waiting to go onto a Ward after the Doctor has decided the patient needs to be admitted to hospital
Casualty Watch is a monthly snapshot of the total time spent by patients in A&E. The official data published by the Department of Health, currently relates only to the third waiting period - the number of trolley waits over 12 hours. This data is used as one of the parameters to award Star Ratings to NHS Trusts.
CHCs have long felt that the total wait for patients needed to be recorded. Unless the real experience of patients is used to judge the performance of the NHS, it is difficult to make sure improvements are real for patients.
